INDUSTRY NEWS: Casio hit by cyber-attack

Casio has just revealed that it was subjected to a cyber-attack, with an unauthorised actor accessing its networks on October 5, causing system disruption that affecting some of its services.

It is as yet unclear as to whether there has been a data breach. Authorities have been notified and the company has restricted external access to its systems as part of its incident response. No ransomware groups have taken credit for the attack.

In June 2023, Casio disclosed that hackers had gained access to the servers of its ClassPad education platform. During that attack, customer data from 149 countries, including names, email addresses, order details and purchase information, was exposed.

An announcement on Casio’s website states:

“On October 5 of this year, Casio Computer Co., Ltd. confirmed that its network had been compromised by a third party.

As a result of conducting an internal investigation, it was determined that unauthorized access caused system failures and prevented some services from being provided.

We are investigating the details, but we are also conducting an investigation by an external specialized organization to confirm whether there is a leak of information, including personal information and other important information.

In addition, after recognizing unauthorized access, we promptly report it to the relevant organizations and take measures such as restricting access from the outside.”

UPDATE :

Casio has confirmed that the cyber-attack was a ransomware one conducted by the group Underground, which has taken credit and claims that 204.9 GB of data were exfiltrated. The information obtained includes confidential company information, information from business partners, employee files, patents, financial documents, legal document, project information, job applicant data, NDAs, and even some customer information.

The data breach also affects information concerning contracts, invoices, and sales, as well as internal legal, financial, HR, audit, sales, and technical documents.
