A. LANGE & SÖHNE : Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon

In 2016, Lange launched the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon. The ‘Datograph’ of the name refers to a flyback chronograph with a jumping minute counter and the Lange outsize date, the ‘Perpetual’ means a perpetual calendar with jumping displays combined with a moon phase and day/ night indicator, and the ‘Tourbillon’ was a 60-second tourbillon with patented stop seconds.

That inaugural platinum cased black dialled edition is now followed by a rather stunning second edition of one hundred watches in white gold with a salmon-coloured dial made of solid pink gold and featuring gold applied hour markers. The hands and minute hands are rhodiumed gold, as are the day, month and year hands. The seconds hand, minute counter hand, and chronograph hand are blued steel. The rhodiumed gold hands are, along with the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock markers, lumed.

For those who are unfamiliar with this watch or are new to the world of horological ultra complications, the subsidiary seconds, the day of the week, and the day/ night indicator are on the left side; the jumping minute counter, months, and the leap year indicator (the small ‘4’), are on the right.

The dimensions and specs are the same as the original from 2016, so this new white gold model is 41.5mm x 14.6mm.

The open case back reveals the manual-wind hand-decorated Lange Calibre L952.2 with plates and bridges of untreated German silver. It beats at 18,800VPH and has a power reserve of fifty hours. It features a lever escapement and a shock-resistant cam-poised balance wheel, in-house balance spring. As is the case with Lange, the engraving on the cock can be identified to the artist who did it.

Along with the traditional crown for winding and setting the time there are three buttons for operating the chronograph, advancing all calendar displays (at 10 o’clock), and there are three recessed correctors for adjusting the day of the week, month, and moon phase.

It comes on a hand-stitched dark brown alligator leather strap with an 18 carat white gold deployant and the Lange website lists an RRP of 285,000 EUR (including VAT).

  1. It’s a remarkable watch – and a remarkable year for AL&S. At SIHH, they set up a couple of photo studios, with lighting, diffusers and backgrounds. It made photographing them relatively straightforward!
