SIHH 2018 : Officine Panerai’s new Luminor Logos

This year, Panerai is updating their Base and Marina models, with a new P.6000 movement with a three day power reserve replacing the 6497 part of this new six model upgrade.

The Luminor Logo has been the mainstay of Officine Panerai’s collection for a very long time now. The clean unadulterated dial of Luminor Base Logo perhaps slightly edges out the Marina, with its small seconds, for those who want a simple pure Luminor.

At SIHH 2018 Panerai formally launched three new Luminor Base Logo 3 Days and three Luminor Marina Logo 3 Days, all in a 44mm AISI 316L polished steel cases, and all containing this new manual-wind movement. The P.6000 beats at 21,600VPH and has the Incabloc® anti-shock device.

The dials are key, when it comes to the Base Logo and Marina. The new models still have the classic design but their highlight is the interlinked ‘O’ and ‘P’ with arrows, in blue and white. What is the meaning of these up/ down arrows? Well it harks back to the brand’s early days – the production of landing systems (upwards arrow for the skies), and the production of underwater devices such as watches, compasses, depth gauge and timers (downwards arrow for the sea).

Firstly, here is a quick summary of all six of these new models, and then a few words on my pick, and why.

So, which is my favourite of these new releases? It’s the PAM774; not just for the clean functional (black) dial that is the essence of the Panerai-as-tool-watch ethos, but also for the blue logo and also, because of the strap. This is one good looking (and comfortable) strap that works really well with the watch.

There’s also something else that is worth noting about this new piece – some of you may also recall the Luminor Base Logo Acciaio PAM634 Special Edition for the 15th Anniversary of Paneristi.com (click here for details). For those who don’t, just click on the link and compare the two.

Perhaps not unsurprisingly, if I was to list one of these new models as runner up, it would be the PAM777.

There was a school of thought, back in the day as it were, that ‘Base Logo is best’ for those who decide on getting a single Luminor. In some part this was because of how its focus is on the simple legible design for which Panerai’s modern success is in some part due. There are many more options available now, but there’s something also to be said about the purity of a Base Logo.
