Some are known just by the single moniker.

Instead of repeating what has been written about him many times before, both in his own words and by others, I direct you to this link. If you are new to the watch world or have somehow landed on this page and aren’t interested in watches, please do take a minute to read about Alan, the remarkable man known as Hammer.

Renowned vintage Panerai and Rolex collector and historian, perhaps Panerai’s greatest unofficial ambassador, and an accomplished hobbyist watchmaker, Hammer is aiming to raise $100,000 for the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association, a Queensland not-for-profit organisation that he both utilises and supports.

Hammer’s watches, 2006 accident and his ties with Panerai are well known, but less well known is his dedication to helping the organisations that have helped him, and helping those who have suffered injuries similar to his own.

How will he do this? By seeking your sponsorship for his participation in the Targa Tasmania Rally. Hammer will be driving a customised 2013 Maserati Gran Turismo MC Stradale, utilising a ‘fly by wire’ satellite accelerator, the first ever driver to use this technology in the Targa.

Targa Tasmania is a tarmac-based rally event tht has been held annually in Tasmania since 1992. The event takes its name from the Targa Florio, which originated in 1905 in Sicily. The Targa Tasmania is in its 23rd consecutive year and covers over 2000kms with over 40 competitive stages. You can read more about the rally on their website.

Joining Hammer in the Targa will be his son Baxter. Their first lead-up event will be Round Two of the 2014/2015 Australian Targa Championships in November 2014 and then Targa Wrest Point in January 2015. They will use these lead-up events to promote Hammer’s fundraising mission and raise awareness about spinal cord injury.

If you have ever owned a Panerai, if you’ve ever been a part of, if you’ve ever wanted to give back in some way to the watch communities in which so many of us have made lifelong friends, please considering making a small donation at his fundraising website here, where you can also read more about the Sporting Wheelies and the technology behind the car that Hammer will use.

What watch will he wear? Well you can find the answer to that important question here.
