At Watches & Wonders 2025 it’s the year of the Luminor Marina for Panerai, but these are not just cosmetic changes – the new additions to the Luminor Marina collection are lighter, thinner, can go deeper when you’re diving, and have a brand-new movement. Sticking to basics (date window aside, for the purists) is a positive – the less tool-like (but popular) Luminors, the Dues, can be considered a category unto itself.
Let’s start with water resistance – it is now up to 500m/ 5 bar, which is the most ever featured in a Luminor, but testing is done at 25% above this its guaranteed depth rating i.e. up to approximately 625m.
Next up is the new automatic P.980 movement, which is used in all the new models. Visible through an open case back (yes, an open case back for 500m water resistance), it is thinner (4.2mm), which means that the watch case’s thickness is also reduced. Beating at 28,800VPH, it has a power reserve of three days and has a stop-seconds function, with a traversing balance bridge rather than cantilevered.
Another updated features it the use of Super-LumiNova® X2 for brighter luminosity for the Arabic numerals and hour markers on the sandwich dial. The small seconds counter has a rhodium lumed hand, and all new models have a date window at 3 o’clock.
The days of Panerai owners collecting non-OEM straps and carrying strap changing tools are long past – the PAM Click release system™ makes its inaugural appearance in the Luminor Marina, along with a second rubber strap for most models, but you can obviously purchase as many additional straps as you like from the brand.
