TAG HEUER: Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon ‘Glassbox’

We all know about how in 1963 Heuer debuted the Carrera model in honour of the Carrera Panamericana race and Jack Heuer’s love of it. Now, in the sixtieth year of one of the most enduring watch models, TAG Heuer are celebrating it with special pieces. One of these is the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon ‘Glassbox’, a sibling to the previous Carerra tourbillon timepieces.

This new model comes in a stainless steel 42mm case that has a water resistance of 100m. So what is the ‘Glassbox’ part of the case? In 2015 a Carrera chronograph was released with such a case and it is a reference to what you may suspect (if you don’t know) already – the sapphire crystal. It is designed to look like the shape of the original crystals used in the 1960s Heuer Carrera chronographs.

The deep blue dial is circular brushed and has two sub dials for the chronograph’s 30 minute and 12 hour counters, alongside a one minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock. Not unexpectedly, there are orange highlights in the form of the running seconds and markers.

Visible through the case back is the in-house COSC-certified automatic Calibre TH20-09 which beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of 65 hours.

Coming on a strap with a brushed and polished folding clasp, the new sixtieth anniversary Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon ‘Glassbox’ has an Australian RRP of $24,050.
