NOMOS is celebrating 175 years of watchmaking in Glashütte with three limited editions of their Ludwig model. Each of the editions are in limitations of 175 pieces each.
Although perhaps not amongst their most high profile watches, the Ludwig is one of my favourite NOMOS models. Their only purely Roman numeral timepiece, it manages to make the most classic of dials still look modern, with its combination of thin elongated numerals, similarly slender bezel, lugs, and case.
These three new versions of the Ludwig all have a polished, enamel-white dial. The leaf-shaped (not stick) hands are tempered blue. The Roman numerals separated by slim markers, a small seconds display, and a railroad minute track. The date model has an unusual feature worth noting – Roman numerals. Available in both automatic and manually wound variants, your options are:
1) Ludwig 35mm model with a manual-wind Alpha movement,
2) Ludwig neomatik 39 with the automatic Caliber DUW 3001, and
3) Ludwig neomatik Date 41 with the automatic Caliber DUW 6101
They are thin dress watches in large part because the movements are slim. The DUW 6101, which premiered in 2018, is only 3.6 mm thick, the DUW 3001 is 3.2mm thick, and the Alpha is 2.6mm. The Alpha and DUW 3001 calibres have power reserves of 43 hours, and the DUW 6101 has a power reserve of 42 hours. They have a three-quarter plate with tempered blue screws, ribbed polishing, and a Nomos-designed ‘swing system’ escapement.
The sapphire crystal display back atop these movements features a limited-edition engraving and the addition: “175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte.”
For those unfamiliar with NOMOS, they have different packaging for different models, and so it is for these three new pieces. The hand-wound watches come in the classic NOMOS box that is made from black poplar wood. The automatic models come in a black full grain leather travel wallet.
The prices for these 175th anniversary models are RRP AUD 3,080 for the Ludwig 35mm, AUD 5,150 for the Ludwig neomatik 39, and AUD 5,870 for the Ludwig neomatik Date 41. They are available from authorised dealers, which you can findat their website.
