NEW: PIAGET goes back to the 1960s

Today is not about watchmaking so much as it about design. At Watches & Wonders 2025 Piaget, a brand that does go the full spectrum between a record-breaking haute horlogerie brand and watches for those who prioritise design above all, launched the ‘Sixtie’ model.

Unapologetically positioned as 1960s-influenced wrist candy, the launch models are available in steel, two-tone, or pink gold, and powered by Piaget’s in-house 57P quartz movement.

The shape is not new, with trapezoid-shaped pendant and watches a historical feature. The new Sixtie collection of trapeze-shaped timepieces are a modern nod to Piaget at Basel Watch Fair of 1969 at which Piaget had their ‘21st Century Collection but more broadly, the work of watch designer Jean-Claude Gueit, with whom they collaborated when they first entered the jewellery watch market segment when he was at Ponti & Genari (a major supplier to Piaget at the time).

He joined Piaget upon the brand’s acquisition of Ponti & Genari in 1967 and was responsible for the design of their cuffs and necklace watches, amongst others, including the introduction of stone dials, until his departure in 1976 to set up on his own, designing for a myriad of watch companies including the Cellini for Rolex.

Sidenote that whilst at Ponti & Genari, he was also responsible for the creation of the first Riviera for Baume et Mercier.

Now, 2025’s asymmetric trapeze-shape case, with its gadroons on the bezel, revives the Piaget design of the late 1960s to 1970s. The Sixtie is not a watch made bigger for modern tastes – it measures 29mm × 25.3mm (6.5mm thick) with water resistance of 50m and has interlaced trapeze-shaped links that curve in on the sides, the bracelet secured with a folding clasp with a push-button.

Featuring a white satin-finished brushed dial with golden hour markers and Roman numerals, the steel model is only available with a diamond-set bezel, whereas the pink gold versions have both options available. The diamond-set models have bezels with 51 brilliant-cut diamonds.

The Australian RRP for each of the models is as follows – steel and diamond ($18,500), steel and rose gold ($21,600), rose gold ($52,500) and rose gold and diamond ($61,500).
