It wasn’t that long ago that IWC’s print advertising was male-focused, with the occasional foray into mentioning women, onto whose wrists IWC watches did appear, though you would not have noticed it from the marketing at the time.
It was also not that long ago that I suggested, during an interview with someone from IWC at SIHH, that they might change their ‘engineered for men’ line to ‘engineered for you’. Since then, the brand has noticed the advantages of adding in the other half of the population to their potential customers and now, with the new Ingenieur Automatic 35, its smaller size hinting at the female wrist size (relative to its usual fare) even though the size is for any wrist, print ads from two decades ago are even more interesting.
The new IWC Ingenieur Automatic 35 is a the 40mm Ingenieur from 2023 shrunk into a smaller case, with a thickness of 9.4mm and water resistance of 100m. There are three variants – one in 18k 5N gold with a gold-coloured dial, and two models in stainless steel with either a black or silver-plated dial. The integrated bracelets feature a butterfly folding clasp.
With a mix of satin and polished finishing, the Inge 35 has all the model’s well known features – a bezel with five (functional) screws, integrated bracelet, and the grid-patterned dial. It also has a framed date window.
The 5N gold model has gold markers and gold-plated hands, whereas the two stainless steel models have steel markers and rhodium-plated hands. The hands and markers in all models are filled with Super-LumiNova.
Through the open case back you can see the automatic Calibre 47110. With a gold-plated oscillating weight, it beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of 42 hours. Finishing wise, there is circular graining and Côtes de Genève.
The Australian RRP for the two stainless steel variants is $15,700 and the 5N gold variant has an RRP of $58,100.
