There are some watch series that, with the odd upgrade or tweak, just seem to maintain longevity, and regularly pop up as suggestions when people recommend a simple classic design to those looking for a dress watch that won’t date, is from an established reliable brand, and which is tends towards the ‘classic watch’ look.
One of these is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Thin collection.
Meet a new update of the Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve, said updates coming in the form of a modernised case and dial design, with a new gradient midnight blue sun-ray dial and perhaps most importantly, an upgraded in-house movement with a 70 hour power reserve.
The Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve retains its easily recognised dial format, with a power reserve indicator between 9 o’clock and 11 o’clock alongside a date sub dial and a small seconds at 6 o’clock. The matte sub dials are larger, the applied hour markers longer, and the Dauphine style hands are a mix of polished and satin finishing. The minutes are golden dot transfers.

In 18kt pink gold, this new iteration is, at 39mm, the same size as the silver-tone dialled Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve (that is still in the collection), but it is thinner – 8.95mm compared to 9.9mm. Along with being slimmer, the lugs have been lengthened. Water resistance is 50m.

The automatic Cal. 938 is used in the stainless steel silver-tone dial model I mention, but it has been upgraded to increase the power reserve from 43 hours to 70 hours. The 938 is now 4.97 mm thick (versus 4.9mm in the Ref. Q1378420). Beating at 28,800 VPH, it has a redesigned mainspring barrel, and Jaeger-LeCoultre has introduced increased use of silicon components.
Coming on a dark blue alligator leather strap with an 18kt pink gold folding clasp, the Australian RRP of the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve is $34,200.
