NEW: Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer Tourbillon Limited Edition

With their new limited edition Senator Chronometer Tourbillon Glashütte Original brings together a patented flyback tourbillon with a small second, stop second and minute detent, alongside the time and a day/ night indicator, all in a 42mm platinum case.

The key feature is the flyback tourbillon, and the key issue that the patent deals with is how to stop the flying tourbillon when adjusting the time. To set the time the crown is pulled out, which activates a vertical clutch that locks the tourbillon’s cage and balance. When the crown is pulled out to its next position, the tourbillon cage moves until the seconds hand at the tip of the cage arrives at the zero marker, whereupon it stops.

When the flyback tourbillon is set to zero, the minute hand simultaneously moves ahead to the next index. This synchronisation of the second and minute hands permits the time to be more precisely set.

The dial and tourbillon cage are mounted on two small towers over the movement. The dial carrier conceals an engraving at 12 o’clock that reflects the lettering “Chronometer Tourbillon” on the mirror-polished inner wall of the case.

The new Senator Chronometer Tourbillon is powered by the manually-wound in-house Calibre 58-06 which beats at 21,600 VPH and has a power reserve of 70 hours. With 572 parts, it features a Glashütte three-quarter plate which, along with the cocks and bridges, have Clous de Paris decoration. The ratchet wheel has a double sunburst pattern. The screw-mounted chatons are white gold. As the name of the model states, it is chronometer certified.

Looking at the dial side, the indication for the aforementioned power reserve is at 9 o’clock. This new iteration of the Senator Chronometer Tourbillon, which has come in one previous incarnation, is a good deal more attractive and ‘lighter’ looking, in large part because of the time dial, which features a day/ night display and simple globe representation which, combined with a colour scheme on the grey to black spectrum, makes for a clean modern look. The previous one had a dark blue dial which was more traditional looking, but also more heavy to the eye. The filigree laser engraving on the movement is also visible from the front and provides both a texture of interest and a counterpoint to the simplicity of the time dial.

The platinum case is water resistant to 50m and the platinum crown has the Glashütte Original double-G logo in a blue insert.

Coming on a dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with platinum buckle, the new Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer Tourbillon in platinum is limited to 50 pieces and has an RRP of EUR 185,000 (including taxes).
