WATCHES & WONDERS 2023: IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40

IWC is revisiting Gérald Genta’s eternal Ingenieur this year, with four new models of the Automatic 40 launched in Geneva.

This latest generation of ‘Inges’ takes inspiration from Gérald Genta’s Ingenieur SL of 1976, which had a screw-on bezel with five recesses, a patterned dial, and an integrated H-link bracelet.

With three references in stainless steel and one in titanium, the new Ingenieur Automatic 40 is powered by the Calibre 32111 which beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of 120 hours.
The case measures 40mm x 10.8mm. It is water resistant to 100m and has a soft-iron inner case for magnetic field protection.

The round bezel is secured to the casing ring with five polygonal screws. It features a mix of polished and satin-finished surfaces. For the Ingenieur SL, a bezel with five recesses was screwed onto the case ring.

The dial, in black, aqua, grey (the titanium model), or silver-plated, is characterised by a grid structure consisting of small lines offset by 90 degrees to each other. The pattern is stamped into a soft iron blank and then galvanised. The hands and indices are rodium-plated.

The new Ingenieur Automatic 40 comes on an integrated stainless steel or grade 5 titanium bracelet with butterfly folding clasp and has an RRP of CHF 12,000 (excluding taxes).

Although it may not get the publicity that say the Big Pilots do, the Ingenieur, especially collectable vintage ones, still retain their position without difficulty. As well, for younger generations entering the luxury integrated bracelet sports watch market, these will undoubtedly be under consideration. They are reliable, well-sized for current preferences, and will no doubt do well.
