WATCHES & WONDERS 2023: Panerai Radiomir “8 Giorni”

It’s the year of the Radiomir for Panerai at Watches & Wonders 2023, with six new models to that collection family, ranging from “8 Giorni” to an annual calendar.

No big surprise but my favourite, and the subject of this post, is one of the heritage-inspired pieces. The “8 Giorni” – the Radiomir 8 Giorni PAM01347 and PAM01348 have, as their name indicates, an eight day power reserve. This is important to note because they pay tribte to the 1958 “8 Giorno Brevettato”.

Both new models are based on the PAM00992 and come in a 45mm case made from Brunito eSteel (TM), with either a blue or brown dial with a grained ‘degraded’ effect. You know about eSteel™ already (95% of it is made from recycled steel) and ‘brunito’ means burnished. The cases have PVD coating, after which the hand finishing gives each watch a slightly different finish. The sandwich dials have a sub seconds at 49 o’clock and the “Giorni” seal at 3 o’clock. The cases have 100m water resistance.

The matching straps are both calf – either chocolate with matching stitching, or Scamosciato Blu profondo.

Powering them, and this is not the first heritage-inspired piece I’ve said this about recently, so it’s a good thing, is the manually-wound Calibre P.5000 which beats at 21,600VPH.

These are very nice pieces, in a good size. For those who think that 45mm is too large for them, these do not sit large at all once on the wrist. The dials are nicely done (I prefer the brown, no big surprise) and as are the matching straps. If you’re looking at getting a Radiomir, or indeed you first Panerai, the brown one in particular is worth looking at.

Both new models have an RRP of CHF 9,500 (including taxes) and will be available from June 2023 exclusively through Panerai boutiques.
