NEW: Squale Master X Marina Militaire

Last year we told you about an interesting dive watch collaboration between Squale and Drass Galeazzi that saw Squale team up with a company renowned for subsea technology (the Drass Group) and diving systems.

The limited edition Squale Drass Galeazzi was inspired by the Squale Master and came in the form of a 1960s-style stainless steel dive watch with a water resistance of 500m, and a helium escape valve (HEV).

Last year also saw YEMA, official partner of the French Air Force since the 1970s, also become an official partner of the French Navy (Marine Nationale), , complete with a new watch collection. In addition, there was, of course, Tudor’s announcement of an official partnership with the Marine National, their first official partnership since the 1980s.

So we come to today’s post, about a new limited edition piece which is a partnership between Squale and Italy’s Marina Militaire (the Italian Navy), ae connection which dates back to the 1980s when Squale was awarded a contract to become the official watch supplier to the La Spezia Scuba Diving Group, for whom they produced milspec pieces.

This newly announced dive watch collaboration, the Squale Master X Marina Militaire, is not restricted to the military, but will nonetheless be in a limited edition of only 300 pieces.

For this collaboration, it was decided to revive the historic Squale ‘Master’ case back, one of the first case backs designed by Charles Von Büren in the 1960s. The case back will have the Italian Navy coat of arms, depicting the four Maritime Republics, as well as the limitation number (xxx/ 300). Underneath is the reliable Sellita SW200-1, beating at 28,800 VPH, and with a power reserve of 38 hours.

There are, obviously, modern improvements, including a helium escape valve and a thicker (4mm) sapphire crystal so as to achieve the watch’s 1,200m water resistance. Interestingly, checking water resistance was done by none other than the aforementioned Drass Galeazzi.

With the thick sapphire crystal in mind, the Squale Master Marina Militare 42mm of 316L satin-brushed stainless steel with a thickness of 17mm.

You will note that the 120 click bezel does not have a tachymeter scale, with only one Super-LumiNova inverted triangle marker. This minimalist design is associated with the military diving corps, for whom timing is of import for longer periods than minutes.

The Squale Master X Marina Militare sandwich dial is black and has a combination of circular and baton indices, apart from the inverted triangle at 12 o’clock. The Super-LumiNova is BGW9, colourwise.

Along with the Squale logo at 12 o’clock is the Marina Militare logo in orange at 6 o’clock, with the he orange-framed minute hand continuing this colour theme as well as being a different colour so as to make it quickly identifiable in dark conditions.

This new Master X Marina Militaire comes on a black rubber strap with a Squale buckle, but you also get a second black NATO-style strap. It all comes in a special IP67-certified Pelican-style box with Squale and Marina Militaire logos.

With a price of CHF 1,290 it is available for order online (including directly from them) with delivery expected in July 2022.
