WATCHES & WONDERS 2022: IWC TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” and “Woodland”

A double chronograph with a black zirconium oxide ceramic case and titanium case back marked the birth of the TOP GUN line in IWC’s Pilot’s Watches family in 2007. Since then, using different materials have been a hallmark of TOP GUN models, adding to the identity of this line.

The new TOP GUN watches are the latest chapter in IWC’s partnership with the U.S. Navy’s Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program. They have traditionally featured some classic ‘identifiers’, such as the use of matte black ceramic cases.

The SIHH 2019 saw IWC make use of Ceratanium® for the first time in their Pilot’s watch collection in the form of the jet black Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium®. (Ref. IW371815) and in the same year IWC also introduced the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert”, the first TOP GUN model in sand-coloured ceramic.

Now, in 2022, IWC is adding two new chronographs in white and green ceramic to the TOP GUN Pilot’s Watches collection – the TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” which has a white ceramic case, stainless steel pushers and crown, titanium case back, and a black dial with black lumed hands. The strap is white rubber strap with a folding clasp.

The TOP GUN Edition “Woodland” comes in the newly developed dark green ceramic case, green dial, black hands, and pushers, crown and case back in matte black Ceratanium®. It comes on a green rubber strap with textile inlay and pin buckle.

Both of the new models are 44.5mm with a thickness of 15.7mm and a water resistance of 60m.

Behind the engraved case backs of both of these new models is the IWC automatic Calibre 69380 column wheel chronograph movement, which beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of 46 hours.

Why white and green? Well the green is self evident, given it is a TOP GUN model. White is associated with Lake Tahoe because it is a popular winter destination for tourists, but in this instance the geographical reference is because it is close to Naval Air Station Fallon, which is where the US Navy’s TOPGUN school is situated.

The use of classic military colours in the TOP GUN line goes back to the Miramar models with anthracite dials and olive green straps. The flight suits of naval aviators have inspired the distinctive shade of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Woodland” (Ref. IW389106).

These are two new ceramic colours for IWC, whose work with this material dates back to the 1980s courtesy, as we have mentioned before, of the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 3755), although it did not make its appearance in the Pilot’s Watches collection until 1994, in the Pilot’s Chronograph Ceramic (Ref. 3705). In a nutshell, colouring ceramic involves combining Zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” and the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph
TOP GUN Edition “Woodland” are both limited in production to 1,000 pieces of each per annum and available through IWC boutiques and authorised dealers. They are eligible for registration in the ‘My IWC’ program, which gives a six year extension to the International Limited Warranty.
