The “craftsmanship of mechanical watchmaking and art mechanics” has been added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
In March 2019 Switzerland and France jointly submitted an application for the consideration of mechanical watchmaking and art in the Jura region for UNESCO recognition. The success of the application is in recognition of the long history, tradition, and skills of those working within watchmaking in the Jura and of how it has shaped the physical and social landscape of the area.
The watchmaking industry in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009.
