HANDS-ON: Sinn U50 S L

Sinn has taken the U50 diving watch and made a model all about luminosity. Limited to 500 pieces, Sinn’s U50 S L is very different to the more high-profile luminous dial release of 2024, but it’s for an entirely different market (and price point).

The case is 41mm and weighs 74g without any strap/ bracelet, with water resistance of 500m. As you would expect, the case is made of tegimented German submarine steel, but it has been blackened for this model. At 4 o’clock is the crown, and the diver’s bezel, with a luminous marker at ‘0’, has the firm click that those familiar with Sinn’s watches will know.

Powering it is the automatic SW 300-1 which beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of 42 hours.

It’s all about the dial for the U50 S L, with the entire dial luminous in the dark. This is done by incorporating luminous paint into a mold using a special casting process. After this hardens, a hybrid ceramic component is created, which is then attached to the base dial.

You know what you’re going to get with Sinn, especially their dive watches. It’s about pure tool watches, albeit slightly heavier ones than some may be accustomed to. A fully luminous dial is a point of difference, but it’s also practical for diving purposes.

Limited to 500 pieces, it is available with three strap options – a matching tegimented bracelet as in these photos, a leather strap, or a silicone strap. The prices are AUD $4,400 on the leather strap, $4,850 on the silicone strap, and $4,960 on the bracelet.
