NEW: Oris ProPilot X Caliber 400 Laser

Following the pebble dial of the previous post, today is again about doing things with dials. Oris’ new ProPilot X Caliber 400 is now available with a laser-etched dial. No this is not about etching a decoration or text into the surface, but a dial that is completely laser-etched, resulting in a surface that is visually fluid, depending on how light falls upon it.

Created for them by a research lab affiliated with ETH Zurich, the shimmering titanium dial is on the green and blue part of the spectrum, and contains no colour pigment – the red waves are eliminated in the process, which involves manipulation so that only blue and green waves are reflected. Oris say that this is the first time that laser has been used in this way in watchmaking.

The dial’s colours are not the only thing about this new watch that has the laser touch. The logo, indices, minute track and dial text are also done with a laser, creating a 3D applied effect. The hands have Super-LumiNova.

The case is 30mm and titanium, with water resistance of 100m. Beneath the open case back is the automatic in-house Caliber 400 which beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of 120 hours. It features a silicon escape wheel and a silicon anchor.

Coming on titanium bracelet with folding clasp, the RRP of the new Oris ProPilot X Caliber 400 Laser is AUD 8,000.
