NEW: Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Spyder RS

Some may associate Porsche Design chronographs with their historical models, but once in a while we get reminded of the fact that it is still a live proposition, albeit one that is very limited.

Porsche Design launched the new Chronograph 718 Spyder RS which, unfortunately for many, is restricted to the buyers of the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS and 718 Spyder RS with Weissach package.

The case and bezel are available in natural or black titanium. Like its car compadre, the Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Spyder RS has some customisation available through what is called the ‘Porsche Design timepieces configurator’, which offers all available Spyder RS standard, metallic, and special colours for the ring around the dial as well as 114 additional colour choices (including some from the marque’s history.

The black carbon dial has various motorsport references such as the indicator at 9 o’clock features a checkered flag design and ‘Spyder RS’. The flyback chronograph’s totalisers have ‘Flyback’ lettering and for those unfamiliar with chronographs, minutes and hours counters are marked in yellow.

The hands can be colored white, black, or yellow (all the colours have non-colour names like ‘performance’, which is white). The white hour and minute indices are white Super-LumiNova.

Through the open case back can be seen the automatic COSC-certified Werk 01.200 with a rotor designed to look like the wheel of the Spyder RS. The back of the watch with the Weissach package has a rotor that is a nod to the magnesium alloy wheel. The end cap of the rotor (which can be customised from a range of colours) is the end cap with an “RS” logo in Brilliant Silver.

The back of the chronograph can be further personalised with text of up to 12 characters.

The watch comes on either a black (car) leather strap with an attachment made of black Race-Tex with ‘Spyder RS’ engraved on it, or a titanium bracelet. Both options come with a quick-change mechanism and a folding clasp with pushers that match the case colour. Contrasting stitching is available in either Carmine Red or Arctic Grey.

As mentioned, the Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Spyder RS is for customers of the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS and Porsche 718 Spyder RS with Weissach package from Porsche Centres and Porsche Design stores. The watches come in a box with a plaque featuring the limited edition status. If you get a 718 Spyder RS with Weissach package and the matching watch, your watch will also have a “Weissach RS” graphic depicting the contour of the Porsche Development Centre’s test track in Germany.
