The Lamborghini and Roger Dubuis collaboration has generated a number of watches and in fact several patents as well, during the course of its life. We did not have the opportunity to handle it until this year but one of these, released two years ago, was the Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X, a limited edition of eight pieces.
The model name suggests that the watch takes its inspiration from the Countach but it’s a little more specific than this – the naming is linked to the Bianco Siderale colour Ferruccio Lamborghini specified for his own Countach in 1980. Roger Dubuis replicated the exact shade of pearlescent Bianco Siderale white for the Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X in a 47mm sized mineral composite fibre (MCF) case. The bezel is also MCF and the crown is titanium with a contrasting red lacquer ring. Fabricated from 99.95% silica and made via a Sheet Molding Compound (SMC), MCF is 2.5 times lighter than ceramic and as you can imagine, very light to hold/ wear. Water resistance is 50m.
The dial is titanium with a satin-brushed and rhodium-plated lower flange which has transferred texts and minute track. The upper flange is shot-blasted and NAC coated with screw-like polished and rhodium-plated hour markers and sapphires around the tourbillons at 4 and 8 o’clock.
The car nods on the dial include the perhaps most obvious one of the replication of engine vents between the tourbillons, and the skeletonised movement has references to the angular bodywork of the car (the Perisscopio roof). The dial is dominated by two tourbillons tilted at 90 degrees to each other in a ‘V’ configuration like the Countach’s cylinders. In keeping with the use of light materials, the tourbillons have titanium cages. The Countach’s red and black interior is also referenced, from movement components to the lining of the rubber strap.
Beneath the titanium open case back is the in-house manually-wound RD112 movement. It beats at 21,7600 VPH and has a power reserve of 72 hours. Finishing consists of shot-blasting, black polishing, and circular graining, with rhodium/ NAC/ PVD coated bridges, plates, and gears. It being Roger Dubuis, the Poinçon de Genève is noted on the movement.
Like its supercar namesake the Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X is sporty and has a lot of wrist presence. It comes on a white skeletonised rubber strap layered with red and black fabric mesh inserted between the rubber layers and a triple folding clasp in black DLC titanium with titanium blades. Both the strap and clasp feature an interchangeable quick-release system (QRS).
