One of the highlights from Cartier at Watches & Wonders 2023 was their introduction of a new specially developed automatic Calibre 9629 MC skeleton (squelette) movement, used for a new Santos Dumont.
Measuring 31.4mm x 43.5mm with a thickness of 8 mm, the Santos-Dumont Skeleton comes in three variants – stainless steel, in rose gold, and a limited edition (150 pieces) in yellow gold with navy lacquer featured on the case, bezel, and bridges.
This latest Santos Dumont pays tribute to its namesake in an unusual way that is both decorative and functional – the new movement has an oscillating weight is a replica of pilot’s 1907 aircraft design called the Demoiselle, over a stylised globe.
Beating at 25,200VPH and with a power reserve of 44 hours, this new movement has 212 parts and took two years to develop. The fun micro-rotor is counterbalanced by the open-worked barrel at 1 o’clock, and you can see the balance wheel at 11 o’clock.
The three Santos-Dumont micro-rotor models come on interchangeable alligator leather straps with an ardillon buckle. Available in June 2023, the yellow gold with blue lacquer model will retail for EUR 37,500, the pink gold for EUR 36,400, and the steel for EUR 27,900.
