NEW : Oris Big Crown Bronze Pointer Date

We did a ‘bronze fortnight’ earlier this year featuring a number of new 2019 pieces, but the month is not yet over, and there has been time for another bronze model to make a late appearance into this year’s bronzed offerings, with a new addition to Oris’ popular and longstanding (there has been one in some form or another since 1938) Big Crown Pointer Date model.

This is one of those collection mainstays that has appeared, over the years, in many size, case material, and dial colour combinations and permutations. The Big Crown Pointer Date has come in bronze before, such as last year when a 36mm sized bronze model with a muted green dial, and a 40mm sized 80th anniversary model, were released.

This new one doesn’t just have a bronze case (in 40mm) but also a solid bronze dial, with a finishing that makes each dial slightly different – the solid bronze dial is chemically treated and then coated with matte lacquer. It’s not an easy thing to stand out from the ‘bronze crowd’, but a dial made from the same material is certainly a distinguishing feature.

For those who prefer to have a date function along with the time, with the modern tendency towards date windows it is sometimes easy to forget that an old fashioned pointer date can still be yours, and is not as intrusive as a window. The hands, numerals, and hour indices are all treated with Super-LumiNova.

Behind the sapphire case back is the Oris automatic Calibre 754 based on the Sellita SW200-1,with Oris’ familiar red bidirectional rotor. It has a power reserve of 38 hours and a stop seconds.

It is not unusual for owners of bronze cased watches, especially divers, to want to play with the patination process by exposing it to various and sundry to get it more weathered looking, especially for those which err on the more shiny end of the spectrum. In light of this, it is important to note that for this watch, the water resistance is 50m. This is for the air, not the water. The origins of the Big Crown Pointer Date and its large crown lie in its creation for aviators, after all.

Mirroring the bronze and brown palette of the watch itself, the Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze comes on a brown deer leather strap with a bronze buckle. The RRP is AUD 2,800/ CHF 1,900 and it is available now.
