AUDEMARS PIGUET : Haute Joaillerie Sapphire Orbe

It is not just about the CODE 11:59 from Audemars Piguet this year, with #thewatchnerd finding himself noticing a rather different new release from the brand at the SIHH.

The Haute Joaillerie Sapphire Orbe is an unabashedly eye-catching white gold creation of diamonds and sapphires, with its centrepiece an orb(e) covered in sapphires in six graded shades of blue and orange ranging from 0.5mm to 1.5mm in diametre.

The 2cm diametre sapphire-set globe rotates open to reveal an 18 carat white gold dial covered with the orange sapphires. This sculpture is not so much about time keeping as it is about the gem-setting skills, but there is nonetheless a small watch face beneath this, powered by the quartz AP Calibre 2601 (which is a scant 9.70mm x 12mm in size).

Featuring over 12,000 stones, and taking some 1,050 hours to patiently set the entire piece by hand, for those who are wondering if they have the wrist for such a piece and the perfect occasion at which to make an appearance with it, it is not a limited edition, so there is time to save up.
