NEW: Chopard Alpine Eagle XL Chrono in rose gold and ceramised titanium

Chopard’s Alpine Eagle collection was launched in 2019 with ten models. In 2020 it there was the addition of the XL (44mm) Chronograph with the same integrated bracelets as the launch models. The ‘XL’ name is because the launch models came in 36mm and 41mm sized cases.

Meet the latest addition to the XL Chrono range, which comes in the same 44mm-sized case but this time, in a bi-material case made from the 18 carat ethical gold for which Chopard is known, and a dark grey ceramised titanium. You may recall that the 2020 XL Chronograph used a recycled steel alloy called Lucent Steel A223 for the case, the first time it was used in Swiss watchmaking, with 70 per cent of the steel coming from recycling.

What is ceramised titanium? Exactly what it sounds like – adding a layer of scratch-proof ceramic onto titanium. It is created through a process of titanium oxidation treatment that gives it a hardness of 1000 Vickers. Chopard states this is the first time that this has been combined with red gold in a watch.

The dial of this latest Alpine Eagle XL Chrono model is black. They’ve called it ‘Pitch Black’ because Chopard’s Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele wanted it to be as black as the Swiss mountain nights. As is the case for all Alpine Eagle models, the brass dial’s texture and sunray-type pattern is intended to evoke the Alpine eagle’s iris. The feather shape-inspired seconds hand counterweight is also present and accounted for.

The tricompax chronograph counters for 30-minute and 12-hours are ringed in red gold, and the hands for the chronograph functions have red inlays.

Powering this is the COSC-certified Calibre 03.05-C flyback column wheel chronograph movement, with a rotor in 22-carat rose gold and 60 hours of power reserve.

This new Alpine Eagle Chrono XL comes on a calfskin leather strap with a whisper of red stitching and an RRP of CHF 34,500.
