NEW: Panerai Platinumtech™ Luminor Marina PAM1116

Panerai’s continued development of alloys, usually in the form of materials with -tech suffix names (Carbotech™, Goldtech™, Fibratech™), is a subject that we have covered over recent years. It is an interesting and difficult challenge for a brand with such a strong model and historical identity to find ways of developing that do not involve introductions of new designs that divide traditionalists and purists from others. Materials development has been the most visible way in which Panerai have done this.

Now, their R&D Laboratorio di Idee has come up with the new Platinumtech™, a proprietary platinum alloy that, like its -tech predecessors, has an emphasis on being hard, durable, and more scratch resistant than a platinum case.

Meet the new Platinumtech™ Luminor Marina (PAM01116).

For self-evident reasons, tool watches are not synonymous with platinum, and thus it isn’t exactly a material that falls within Panerai’s usual orbit. In combination with this interesting new alloy is a continuation of a theme that we brought up in 2020 – green dials. In this case, a ‘sandwich’ dial with sun-brushed finishing, which comes with Arabic numerals and indices in a sandy colour that are filled with green Super-LumiNova.

The case is 44mm with a thickness of 13.4mm thick. Platinumtech™ is used not just for the body and bezel but also the screw-down caseback, and patented crown protector with its crown-locking lever.

The brushed caseback features a medallion reminding you of its 70 year warranty. Through the sapphire ‘porthole’ through which you can see Panerai’s reliable in-house automatic Calibre P.9010, which beats at 28,800VPH and has a 72 hour power reserve.

It comes on a dark brown alligator leather strap with ecru stitching, and a brushed Platinumtech™ trapezoidal pin buckle. There is a second strap (to be selected by the owner at the time of purchase), along with a screwdriver for strap changing. It is important to note that this isn’t a watch for diving-related activities, as its water resistance is 50m.

Coming in a lacquered wooden box with a lumed Luminor Marina logo on its lid, the Platinumtech™ Luminor Marina is limited to 70 pieces and with a 70 year guarantee. The length of the warranty, as well as the limitation number, refer to the 70th anniversary of the Luminor in 2020. It is available at Panerai boutiques with an RRP of CHF 39,000 including taxes.
