SIHH 2018 : A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Copper Blue

One of the ‘perils’ as it were, of a brand like A. Lange & Söhne come the SIHH time, is that the focal point inevitably ends up being the watch that also dominates their booth. Other novelties get their share of attention, but the seemingly ‘most simple’ models can get overlooked.

The Saxonia Thin is considered by many to be the brand’s entry-level watch, but this new Copper Blue dialled addition is no ‘entry’ anything. It is 39mm of white gold with a solid silver dial coated with a layer of Aventurine glass (aka ‘goldstone’) in which there are microscopic flecks of copper oxide crystals embedded within the coating This means a beautiful shimmering blue expanse of a dial. If you aren’t thinking of a night sky when looking at this dial, I don’t know what you’re thinking of.

The case is a slim 6.2mm, and its white gold is carried through to the hour and minute hands as well as the hour markers, which are in rhodiumed gold.

The watch itself is powered by the caliber L093.1 manually-wound movement, the same one used in the 37mm and the 40mm Saxonia Thin models. It has a power reserve of seventy-two hours.

Coming on a matching dark blue glossy alligator strap, with its 39mm sizing, this is a watch that can be worn by all types of wrists and in fact, would make a very elegant evening watch.

As a brand that has focused very much on the movement and technical side of things, with aesthetics and design, however attractive, following function, the introduction of these and some variously coloured Little Lange 1 watches (which we shall cover in a subsequent post) is an interesting 2018 segue.
