NEWS : Oris Artelier Jumping Hour

Jumping Hour _2

Oris have announced a new addition to the Artelier collection, to be formally launched at Baselworld 2014, and featuring their first jump hour watch. Regular readers of Horologium will know that I have a particular fondness for jumping hours, and this one is an attractive addition to this form of time display.

The Artelier line is part of the ‘Culture’ collection, Oris’ other lines being ‘Diving’, ‘Aviation’ and ‘Motorsport’. As the name indicates, this is where Oris places its dress watches such as this one.

The new jumping hour features a quite classically designed dial, with a digital hour display in a window at the top, and two intersecting sectors showing the minutes on top and the seconds on the bottom. The dial itself is silver guilloche with polished nickel indices and hands.

Its case is stainless steel and 40.5mm in size, the automatic calibre 917 (based on a Sellita SW300) with its distinctive Oris red rotor, visible through the screw-down case back. The front has ‘double-domed’ sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The strap is brown calf, with a deployant clasp.

This isn’t a watch designed to stretch any boundaries of jump hour design, but that’s because Oris is not about this. It is about solidly made mechanical watches, often with designs that are intended for longevity. The RRP for this new Artelier Jumping Hour is CHF 4,100.
