BASELWORLD 2013 : Dior Chiffre Rouge C03 Moonphase

Dior’s Chiffre Rouge range of men’s watches form what the brand calls their ‘exceptional wrist watch’ collection, and the models falling under this line are characterised by their rather distinctive asymmetrical case shape, automatic movements, and limited editions of as few as 15 pieces. A few years ago a certain watch enthusiast blogged on my previous blog home about a rather unusual Chiffre Rouge, the T01. Although not to everyone’s taste, I still think that it’s arguably the most interesting member of the collection to date.

At Baselworld 2013 Dior has added a new relative to the T01, the C03 Moonphase (although there are C01 and C02 Chiffre Rouge models, I like to think of the T01 as a close relative). This new model comes in a 42mm stainless steel case and, in line with the T01, the dial is black/ red, although unlike the T01, which did not even have the brand mentioned on the dial, the C03 does, in addition to the collection identifier and ‘automatic’. For me, I’d have preferred that they stuck with the ‘no text’ philosophy of the T01, it would have made for a cleaner dial. The black expanse of the dial is further broken up by  a large red date at 2 o’clock, moonphase indicator at 6 o’clock and a seconds sub dial at 9 o’clock.

Showing that they are serious about what goes into the watch, the new C03 Moonphase uses the automatic Zenith Cal. Elite 691 (50 hour power reserve) customised to Dior’s specifications with “Dior Homme Calibre Zenith 691” on it, visible through a sapphire open case back. In fact, the movement is the same one that appears in Zenith’s own Class Elite Moonphase.

The C03 will be in a limited edition of 100 and comes on a black alligator leather strap with deployant clasp. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a price but contact your Dior watch dealer if you’re interested.
